Troop 284 History |
| Here is a story as shared from our original
Scoutmaster, William Barnet, during the evening of our 70th Anniversary. Mr. Barnet (age 21 at the time) was our first Scoutmaster. Back then in 1918, West Seattle had more woods than houses. It was pretty easy for the troop to go camping, because some of the best outdoor camping may have been right down the street! Well, the Troop was getting pretty ambitious, and the Scouts decided to do an extended campout across Puget Sound near Manchester State Park. The Scouts hiked down to the location of old Luna Park, and caught one of the Mosquito fleet boats and headed out for their overnight. Scouting was pretty new and the whole West Seattle neighborhood knew that the Scouts were out that night on their big trek. The very next morning there was a huge explosion. This explosion was so severe, that almost every window broke out of every house on the north side of West Seattle. Everyone's minds turned to the Scouts... what were they up to? It was found later in the day, an old ammunition barge from World War I had blown up in the middle of Elliott Bay, and had caused all the damage. It was a day Mr. Barnet would never forget, and one that would live in our Troop's history forever. Glenn Blue |
